Obituary of Allan John Whitney
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Allan John Whitney on September 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in London, Ontario, Allan became a proud Maritimer after his family moved to Prince William and later to Marysville in the mid-1960s. It was in Marysville that Al grew up, forming lifelong friendships and embracing the spirit of the community. Whether fishing on the Nashwaak, roaming the neighbourhood with friends, or spending time on the “corner,” Al’s early years were filled with joy, mischief, and camaraderie.
Al’s sharp intellect and unwavering discipline led him to pursue both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Classical Greek at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. He remained devoted to the study of Homer and the classics throughout his life, often reflecting deeply on their meaning and relevance.
A black belt in Karate, Al practiced kata and sai with dedication, balancing his martial arts skill with a gentle and thoughtful nature. He was a man of quiet strength and deep wisdom.
Al retired from his role as a Control Room Operator at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, where he learned to be a ‘jack of all trades’ and built many meaningful friendships.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl (Jardine) Whitney; his stepchildren Rachael (Mike), Andrew, and Addy; and grandchildren Bryson, Leila, and Avery. Al also leaves behind his sisters Rose (Leonard), Tanya (Ross), and Lyra (Ben), as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. He was predeceased by his parents, Norm Whitney (2016) and Karen Whitney (Jensen) (2006).
Al’s presence brought joy to every gathering. He was a generous listener, and when he spoke, his words carried weight. His love for nature was profound—he believed all creatures and the earth were our relations. Time in the woods was sacred to him, and he shared a special bond with his dogs (all named Barky) and the ravens who seemed to be lifelong companions.
Above all, Al was a musician. Music was his solace and his gift. Whether playing or listening, he found joy in every note. Family gatherings were never complete without Al’s full band setup—he was our entertainer, our teacher, and our inspiration. His passion for music touched many lives.
