Obituary of Richard Murray Newman

With profound sadness, the family of Richard Murray Newman announces his peaceful passing on December 16, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at the Veteran’s Health Unit in Fredericton, NB.

Born on a crisp autumn day, September 8th, 1939 in Saint John, NB, Richard was the cherished son of the late Herman and Helen (Brown) Newman.

Richard proudly served his country as a Naval Officer in the Canadian Navy for an incredible 32 years. Among his many accomplishments, he and his UNFICYP Cyprus platoon were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1988 for their invaluable work as United Nations peacekeepers, promoting international harmony and security. A dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Masonic Lodge, Richard’s love for people and music was infectious, and his deep faith and unwavering kindness touched everyone he met. He was a man of integrity and compassion, leaving a legacy of cherished memories to be held close by all who knew him.

Richard will be deeply missed by his loving companion in later life, Vivian McLellan; his daughter-in-law, Heather Newman; his chosen daughter, Carolyn Vautour; his grandchildren, Josh, Caleb, and Melanie; and his great-grandchildren, Brianna, Kylie, Sophia, Jacob, Jax, Jase, Hunter, Hudson, and Hayden. He is also survived by his brother, Gary; sister-in-law, Marion; chosen grandchildren, Stacey (Jamie) and Jason (Catherine); chosen great-grandchildren, Chloe, Jayden, and Colton; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Erma; his son, Rick; his brother; and other extended family members.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Hogg Funeral & Cremation Services (10 King Street, Minto, NB, E4B 3N5), followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM . Interment will take place at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, Saint John, NB.
